Microwave Distillation and Microwave Assisted Synthesis and Microwave Assisted Extraction – The Basics

Microwave Distillation can be categorised majorly as Microwave-Assisted Hydrodistillation (MAHD) which combines microwave heating with the traditional hydrodistillation method (using distilled water as a solvent for extraction) and Microwave-Assisted Dry Distillation (MAD) which employs the mecthod of solventless extraction.

Microwave Assisted Synthesis (MAS) is used to rapidly heat the sample directly by rotating and aligning the polar molecules with the field of microwave, thus energising/exciting the molecules through friction and collisions creating new compounds/materials. Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE) uses the same principle for extracting target compounds at different temperatures from various organic and inorganic sample matrices.

Direct molecular heating significantly reduce reaction times, provide higher yields, produce purer products while aligning with Green Chemistry principles of energy efficiency and usage of environmentally friendly solvents.

Microwave Distillation / Synthesis System – The NuWav-MDSS

NuWav-MDSS incorporates a Multi-Mode SS316L oven for high-volume open vessel reactions, i.e. non-pressurized reactions. 4-Neck Glass Vessels of different volumes (up to 10 Litres), which are a standard supply with the equipment, can be placed on the PTFE base with pre-filled samples in the microwave assisted distillation system. The inbuilt IR temperature sensor immediately reads the sample temperature and the reactor is ready for synthesis / extraction / distillation. The glass vessel necks are primarily used for external attachments like Clevenger Apparatus, Inert Gas Purging / Vacuum Option, Teflon Stirring Bead Insertion and Mechanical Stirrer. Clevenger Apparatus for distillation includes the Straight Tube, Y-Connector, Barrett Distilling Receiver, Pressure Equalizing Dropping Funnel, Allihn Condenser and PTFE magnetic beads, which are a standard supply with the NuWav-MDSS. Reactions can be setup/programmed with up to 5-steps of data, all from the 7" colour touchscreen using NUTECH’s user friendly UI. All programmed data can be stored and retrieved as per users choice. Unlimited operation data storage is possible. Tedlar Bags / Balloons can be attached for reaction gas collection for further analysis on a Gas Chromatograph. Reagents can be added / extracted during the run and external peristaltic pump / external chiller can be attached. For Microwave Assisted Hydro-Distillation / Dry-Distillation, PT100 probe sensors are used which comes as standard with the equipment. As we have a multi-mode cavity, customers can use existing lab glass vessels / petri dish microwave assisted distillation. An inbuilt camera provides a clear view of the reaction chamber on the dedicated external colour 4.5" LCD. Real-time graph for temperature-power vs time is displayed on the extraction system’s display. The installed Magnetic Stirrer is programmable to up to 2400RPM and the external Mechanical Stirrer can be configured to up to 1500rpm. The explosion proof double-locking door mechanism with door ajar warning provides complete safety to the user.

*A UV lamp of 365nm and power of 300Watts can be installed as an option for photochemical / photocatalytic reactions. 4-Neck Quartz Vessels are standard supply with the optional UV Upgrade.

1000Watts of low-trajectory non-pulsed microwave with a resolution of 1Watt through an inverter magnetron. Working temperature of 300°C (upgradable to 999°C) with the German engineered non-contact IR sensor and up to 250°C with the contact based Pt100 probe sensor.

The inbuilt 7” acid-resistant colour touchscreen employs an universal 16:9 ratio with Nutech’s proprietary software for seamless setup and storage of reaction processes.

Temperature-time, power-time and temperature-power-time modes are available for the users ease and flexibility to setup reactions with up to 5 steps of temperature / power / time inputs on a single program.

3 Litres and 7.5 Litres 4-neck glass RBF comes as standard with the NuWav-MDSS. Optional 4-neck glass RBF’s volumes ranges from 2 Litres to up to 10 Litres.

The microwave distillation / synthesis system comes with an in-built Magnetic Stirrer with up to 2400RPM and an external Mechanical Stirrer with up to 1500 RPM, a dedicated inert gas purging facility and LED chamber illumination.

NuWav-MDSS comes with a T-stand attachment to secure the supplied Barrett Distilling Receiver, Pressure Equalizing Dropping Funnel, Allihn Condenser. T-Stand is used for the distillation glassware setup.

PTFE magnetic beads, connectors, tube, RBF base are provided as standard with the NuWav-MDSS.
